The decoration for this pot is inspired by the native nz hen & chicken fern.

The young, undeveloped fronts of the Mouku/Hen & Chicken fern were eaten by Māori and were a favourite kinaki (relish) for potatoes. Small baskets of eel or kokopu were covered with pūwhā or mouku for cooking, with the leaves eaten as greens. (Source: Maori Plantuse Database, Landcare Research NZ)
