Sam’s celebration of the NZ Native Longfin Eel/Tuna.
High fired ceramic, suitable for indoor and outdoor display.
THIS EEL IS A SECOND - PLEASE CHECK THE PHOTOS CAREFULLY BEFORE PURCHASE. Sam was experimenting with a different glaze and this little white and green tuna is the result. A very different look to our usual bronze/gold glaze but we kinda like it. Other than the difference in colour, this sculpture has no imperfections and is suitable to be displayed indoor or outdoor.
Display instructions
Tuna can be displayed on a flat surface without rods, or mounted outside with rods using the holes on the underside (email us seperately to order rods).
Postage and Packaging/Shipping
Pick up from the pottery is free - if you live locally or are passing through you are welcome to pop in to pick up your tuna. Please text or phone first so we can make sure we are there to greet you.
If you require shipping your tuna/eel will be packaged with love into one of our handmade recycled plywood boxes, surrounded by soft packaging to keep it safe. Rest-assured that your new sculpture will arrive safely, but in the unlikely event of damage insurance will cover purchases up to $2000.

$20 REFUND IF YOU RETURN YOUR PACKAGING!
As part of our commitment to re-using and re-cycling we invite you to return your sculpture box and packaging to us at the pottery. In return, we’ll flick you a $20 refund. Instructions for return packaging will arrive with your tuna.

If displayed with the head to the left (as in the first few photos) the damage is invisible but on some angles it’s clearly seen. See the photos for more details. The rest of the body has no imperfections.

THIS ITEM IS A SECOND - Please check the photos carefully before purchase. This lovely little jug had some carbon stuck to it that melted during firing and made a small black mark on one side (see the third photo). Still a beautiful piece, with a bit of extra character! Great bargain. Pours well, holds 4- 5 standard cups. Great for a chilled summer drink in the garden.

THIS ITEM IS A SECOND - Please check the photos carefully before purchase. Sam was experimenting with a range of different pots for storing rongoā tī (herbal teas). This little beauty is lovely, but has a slightly loose lid. Other than that, it’s a beautiful little pot.

Inspired by traditional hinaki used by tangata whenua to trap eels. Made in preparation for ‘Manga Maha, Awa Kotahi One River, Many Streams’ Exhibition at Aratoi Museum of Art and History.
This sculpture was a maquette (scale model) used to visualize and test forms and ideas for a larger, full scale hinaki piece.
Māori used a number of nets and pots to catch fish and eels. In the final image, there is a tāruke kōura on the tree– a pot for catching crayfish. On the ground in front of it are a hīnaki (eel trap) and a tītoko ika (hand net). In the background is a kupenga (fishing net).
